Latin American Studies Council of Asia and Oceania

Consejo de Estudios Latinoamericanos de Asia y de Oceanía

(CELAO)  

The Latin American Studies Council of Asia and Oceania (CELAO) was established in Osaka, Japan in 2003 to serve as a forum for multidisciplinary research on Latin America and to promote cooperation with similar organizations devoted to Latin American studies in the Asia and Oceania region. It was established at the 11th General Assembly of FIEALC*, hosted by the National Museum of Ethnology and Osaka University in 2003.

The members are from Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, South Korea, and Latin America.

  
*FIEALC (Federación Internacional de Estudios de América Latina y el Caribe) is the international organization, composed of more than 100 academic institutions both inside and outside of Latin America. The head office is at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.  

The International Conference of CELAO is a biennial event which has already been held in eight countries/region namely Australia, South Korea, India, Mexico, Philippine, Japan, New Zealand and Macau S.A.R., China. The conference aims to gather academics and intellectuals around the world to share their knowledge and experiences in relation to the general theme of the conference.

·  2^nd Conference - 2007, at the Convention Center COEX in Seoul, South Korea

·  3^rd Conference - 2008, at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, India

·  4^th Conference - 2010, at the University of Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Mexico 

·  5^th Conference - 2012, at the University of Asia and the Pacific in Manila, Philippines 

·  6^th Conference - 2014, at Kyoto University in Kyoto, Japan  

·  7^th Conference - 2016, at Victoria University of Wellington in Wellington, New Zealand 

·  8^th Conference – 2018, at University of Macau in Macau S. A. R., China

·  9^th Conference – 2023, at Shanghai University in the People's Republic of China

The 9^th Conference will be held in Shanghai, China in 2022.
